Description
While this pretty bow is not specifically authentic, it is an amalgamation of several bows that I admired. This bow has two different kinds of lockplates, a shield shaped plate, or, a pilgrim shell lockplate. Please specify which.
Pilgrim badges (usually made of a lead alloy) were worn in the late medieval period, as souvenirs by Roman Catholics on pilgrimage. The scallop shell was a common and popular badge which took on often mythical meaning. It’s thought that they were collected, both the badge and the shell itself, by pilgrims that went on pilgrimage to Santiago, specifically. Often incorporated in other objects, you can find the scallop shell on many extant medieval crossbows.
I incorporate this pilgrim/scallop shell as steel, brass, or horn lockplates on this bow.
