BASIC SIGHT

Sight

The basic sight is a simple strip of brass plate that screws to the top of the stock behind the lock. The brass plate has a series of peep-holes, about a quarter inch apart. The point of your bolt serves as a foresight. As range increases, you sight through the higher holes, thus increasing the elevation. At close range (20 yards or so,) a sight makes little difference in accuracy. At forty yards, you'll be glad you got one.

RENAISSANCE SIGHT

These handsome sights are based on those found on gentlemen's sporting bows in the 16th century. The original sights were designed to fall after every shot, to make way for whatever spanning machine the bow was designed for. Our sights don't fall or fold. Instead they unscrew from their mounting plate so they can be remove for greater security. The Renaissance sight is no more accurate than the basic sight, but it's definitely prettier, made of blued steel and polished brass, with an inlet mounting plate. Note that outside of heavy siege machines, sights were not at all common on medieval (pre sixteenth century) bows.

Available on: Finnish, Flemish Arbalist, Germanic, Italian, Maximilian, Padre Island, Skane, Straight, Ulrich, Western Bows

Option Fee: $85.00

SAFETY

For those who wish to hunt with their bows, as many states in the US require safeties for hunting. Ours is an unobtrusive (not authentic) rotating safety that locks the trigger, preventing the bow from being fired. It is not self-setting: you will have to remember to turn it on and off. Beware, the long trigger on a medieval crossbow gives you lots of leverage that can overcome the safety. The safety will prevent your firing the bow by bumping the trigger, but if you PULL HARD ENOUGH, you can break the safety-bolt.
